Dovetail on Overend - A Suburban Cafe Bustling of Passion & Purpose

Untitled
The bustling sound of patrons welcomed us as we approached Overend Street in Norman Park - a suburb located not too far away from the CBD. We were not surprised, to be honest as we were very excited to finally unravel Brisbane's hidden coffee gem - Dovetail on Overend

We've known the cafe through our cousin, Rejoice, who owns and personally operates this suburban cafe along with her husband, Adam Thomson who aims to connect people through their specialty coffee and tea, along with their healthy, gluten-free dishes and dessert. While we have witnessed the cafe's story through Facebook and social media posts, our impression of the cafe grew fonder when we tried it ourselves.

A Marriage of Good Coffee and Healthy Food

Prior to opening Dovetail on Overend, Adam has been doing coffee reviews part time whilst working in the IT industry, full-time. After years on the industry, he found himself shifting his career and following his passion - coffee. Backed with the knowledge he gathered from all his reviews and the connections he made along the way, Adam started his coffee journey by working for Uncle Joe's Cafe. When his time finally came, he opened Dovetail on Overend with his wife, using the beans from Uncle Joe's, which is regarded as one of the best roasters in Brisbane.

On the other hand, Rejoice, a self-taught baker found herself with a goal to provide healthy food options for her family. Having a husband and a daughter who were both diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, Rejoice started baking gluten-free desserts for her family to enjoy. Pairing her natural baking skills with her husband’s talent with coffee - the goal to provide healthy and quality dishes through their cafe was born.

When purpose meets passion - Adam trains aspiring baristas for free while Rejoice donates a portion of her donut sales to Caritas as their charity work.

An Array of Gluten-Free Options
Untitled
It may came to a surprise, but most of the dishes in the cafe are gluten-free, without extra costs. Having to deal with coeliac disease as a family, Adam and Rejoice ensured that their cafe serves and handles gluten-free ingredients safely and properly. Each dish in the menu was carefully crafted and personally created by Adam and Rejoice themselves. While savouring their Buddha Bowl (my personal favorite), Brekkie Pizza and Baked Eggs we never realized they were all gluten-free until Rejoice told us they were. Their dishes tasted as good, if not, better as how they were presented on the outside. Customers may also select vegetariam options, unless specified.

Have I told you that their desserts are gluten free yet the consistency and the taste are the same, if not better than the normal ones? I kid you not but Rejoice has mastered creating beautifully baked cakes, cupcakes and donuts that are gluten free.

A Place For Everyone To Connect

The word Dovetail was actually derived from the dovetail joint, a woodoworking technique used to connect woods together was the inspiration for this outdoor seating cafe. That through their specialty coffee, curated dishes and excellent customer service, they would be able to connect people together. We have witnessed this, in fact while we were in the cafe - that people of different age, background and profession walking in the cafe, eager and excited to grab a bite or have a sip of coffee. With only 18 seats available, we saw customers patiently lining up for the next available seat or for their takeaway coffee, eventually ending up with small conversations along the way.
